The characters are rather shallow, with two of the most enjoyable antics in form of Eleonora being crazy protective of her love interest and Dorothea talking in edgy riddles being showcased above. The legendary true demon king is only ever “shown” in text, and is just defeated as a side note at the end of the story line of each of the princesses and this is because this game is not about a villain taking control over the world, but rather about the various princesses and their fight for each other’s crests. If you actually hoped for some kind of fight against a terrifying demon king that wants to drown the world in darkness, I have to disappoint you. But, of course, this was not war but rather a playful match between friends to decide who is the strongest and that is basically the story. They could not get to a unified vote due to all having their own beliefs and ideas about what has to happen, so they concluded that they should fight over each other’s crests, symbols of power that each princess had somewhere on her body, and decide who leads the charge that way. At some point in time, the humans managed to free themselves from the yoke of oppression, and the various princesses of the regions met to decide who should have the honor of defeating the true demon lord once he arrived because the arrival of some super demon is apparently going to happen. So, in this distant world, there were once three demon kings that split the world into their own territories and ruled over the humans. “Duel Princess” plays in the world of … just “world”, I guess. But sometimes you can be positively surprised by games that you go in completely blind, so I sat down, invested a few hours into the title, and can now give you an idea of what to expect from “Duel Princess” after fully completing the game. I have not talked about a videogame featuring playing cards for quite a while, haven’t I? Well, time to change that and in what better way to do that than talking about the fanservice-ladened videogame genre-mix that is “Duel Princess”? The quality of the artwork combined with the fact that there are cards and deck building being used as one of the major gameplay elements caught my attention, but I would be lying if I said that I had any idea of what to expect from the title.
